reesetee commented on the word spoon bonnet
Worn by women in the United States around the mid-19th century. The brim of a spoon bonnet was tall; the sides curved backwards to form a spoon shape. Wide silk ribbons were attached at each brim point and tied under the chin. A gathered piece of material at the back of the bonnet, called the curtain, cape, or bavolet, covered confined hair and the neck.
